Before You Build In, Let Go of These 5 Cabinetry Myths
When planning custom cabinetry, don’t design only for the picture. Design for the way you actually live.
1. Open shelving looks great—but it takes work.
Open shelves need constant dusting and styling. If you love the look, keep a small section open for display and use closed cabinetry for everything else.
2. Your countertop will never stay empty.
Keys, packages, bags—something will always end up there. Instead of fighting it, plan for it. Add a drawer and nearby outlets and turn the countertop into an intentional drop zone.
3. Don’t divide every inch into tiny compartments.
A space designed for shoes or bags today may have a completely different purpose a few years from now. Adjustable shelving gives your storage room to evolve.
4. Small appliances won’t stay hidden.
The things you use every day will always find the most convenient spot. For frequently used appliances, create a dedicated place where they can be used in position—with power outlets and ventilation planned from the start.
5. More cabinetry doesn’t always mean more function.
Fill a room too much and you lose light, openness, and circulation. Sometimes leaving one cabinet out creates more value—and gives your home room to adapt to what comes next.
Great cabinetry isn’t about fitting everything into today. It’s about leaving room for tomorrow.
